Film To See: Greener Grass (2019)

Greener Grass (2019) Written and directed by Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe

I sat down to watch a film today, I looked through my watchlist of weird movies I’ve wanted to see and I was drawn to a movie poster with a body and head that was replaced by a mouth with braces called “Greener Grass” . The photo was dreamy and odd and without even reading the description I decided to put it on.

I was hooked within the first 30 seconds. Set in a dollhouse-esque version of a suburban community where every adult wears braces. I quickly learned that the film is a social satire about living in suburbia. The film has spectacular and hilarious dialogue that can be interpreted as just wacky, or that it serves a deeper meaning. The film uses dreamy pastels and great costumes and set design to create this strange suburban community where everyone drives golf carts instead of cars.

Originally created as a short film, this film surrounds two suburban soccer moms who seem to be competing over who has the better, or perfect life. It plays on the over-politeness and the masks everyone has on constantly in these communities, pretending everything is picture perfect, when in reality things are far from perfect. The writers use surrealism and hilarious symbolism to convey bigger ideas about how these women view their and maneuver their lives.

I would describe this movie as a comedy with lingering horror aspects but never enough to completely change the tone of the movie, but merely to add underlying anxiety to the plot.

I definitely recommend this movie to anyone familiar with North American suburbia. It is a wacky, weird hilarious and visually beautiful film that I enjoyed every second of!

To give you a better idea of what this film has to offer, take a look at some captures from the movie that don’t give away to much.

....Oh yeah fun fact, the two main actresses in this movie are also the writers and directors! So yeah go girls I guess.

Have you seen it? What did you think?
